Common Dog Allergies.

Dog owners know their dogs and monitor their health daily. So when a pet begins scratching and licking their paws much more than usual, they become concerned, and rightly so.

Dogs commonly have allergies and skin conditions that can cause this behavior. Seeking a veterinarian’s care is highly recommended to provide relief for your pet.

The Most Common Allergies & Symptoms

FAD or flea allergy dermatitis

Much as the name suggests, this is a condition caused by the saliva of fleas and is quite unpleasant. Anyone who has had a flea infestation in their home knows just how unpleasant it can be. Excessive scratching and biting on paws and legs are typical signs of flea allergy. Treatment: monthly oral or topical flea prevention.

Food allergy dermatitis

Much less common, this allergic reaction happens for the same reasons it happens in humans. The body cannot tolerate or process an ingredient in the food. In Australia, it is seen mostly in diets containing wheat, beef, or chicken. Itchy, dry skin and scratching are typical signs of a food allergy. Treatment: changing the diet to a vet-recommended food.

Atopy or atopic dermatitis

This is seen mostly in dogs who spend a lot of time outdoors. It is a reaction to pollen, mold spores, dust, or mites in the environment. Owners will see their dogs scratching under armpits or in between folds of the skin, and inflammation. Treatment: regular grooming and bathing with medicated shampoo and antihistamines or steroids.
